A styolite is an irregular solution surface in a rock. They are produced by diagenesis as the rock is put under pressure, for example by tectonics. Stylolites are most common in limestone, because these rocks can be relatively easily dissolved in groundwater. Belgian hardstone often contains stylolites for example.
