Quartz is a mineral that consists of silicium oxide (SiO2). It is the most common mineral on Earth and is a major component of sand and rocks like Granite. Under the influence of high temperatures Quartz can dissolve in groundwater. By precipitation of the dissolved minerals in cavities in the rock, geodes can be formed.
Known varieties of Quartz include Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Chalcedony and flint.
