Regression

A regression is the shifting of the coastline towards the sea for a certain geological time. The opposite is a transgression. A regression can be caused by both absolute fall in sea level (e.g. climate change), or the uplifting of the land.

Uplifting of the land can be caused by tectonic forces, but also because the land is rising after melting of an ice sheet. Due to the disappearance of the weight of the ice sheet the land will slowly rise for thousands of years afterwards.

In sedimentary rocks is a regression generally can be recognized by a trend of thicker layers with coarser sediment in the stratigraphy.
