A taxonomic unit is polyphyletic if the last common ancestor is not one of this taxonomic unit. In modern taxonomy is aimed for taxonomic classifications that entirely follow the evolutionary lineage. Through DNA testing, many taxonomic classifications have been revised. Many obsolete classifications are polyphyletic. With fossil species investigating the lineage is complicated because DNA testing is usually not an option. In paleontology polyphyletic classifications are still common.
