Pangea was a supercontinent in which all continents were merged together at the end of the Permian period and the Triassic. At the end of the Triassic, Pangea broke up into Gondwana and Laurasia. The formation of Pangea caused the Hercynian orogeny (mountain building). These include the Appalachians and the Urals mountains.
The supercontinent Pangea has been a preceded between 1100 to 750 million years ago. This supercontinent is called Rodinia and has disintegrated into separate continents. Only at the end of the Permian period they merged together again to form Pangea.
