The term Nomen nudum in the taxonomy is used to indicate an invalid species for science. This can occur because it is not sufficiently describedon which material the species is based, or that the original material is lost. It may also be that the material on which the species is based is found to be too low in quality. Nomen Nudum occurs mainly in all kinds of old publications, but today scientists can also make mistakes. Normally, for each new species a Holotype is designated.
