A species in the taxonomy is Nomen dubium as the actual existence of the species is questionable. This may occur when the material on which the species is based (the Holotype), is too low in quality in retrospect. A Neotype can be determined which again creates a valid species. Also, it can be concluded that it is impossible to describe the species on the basis of the material and the publication. Than this species is an invalid species, a Nomen nudum.
