Echinodermata
Echinodermata or echinoderms form a phylum within the Deuterostomia. Echinoderms are marine animals and have a skeleton composed of calcareous plates. Most echinoderms are identified by a pentagonal symmetry. The Echinodermata include the:
- Blastoïds (Blastoidea): an extinct group;
- Crinoids (Crinoidea): sea lilies and feather stars, a existing group (Ordovician - present);
- Cystoids (Cystoidea): an extinct group (Ordovician - Devonian);
- Ophiuroids: existing group with the brittle stars;
- Asteroids: existing group with starfish and cushion stars (Ordovician - present);
- Holothuroids: existing group with the sea cucumbers (Silurian - present);
- Echinoids: existing group with sea urchins.
