In the scientific naming of organisms taxonomic distinction is made between nested, hierarchical groups based on specific characteristics. A significant level herein is that of the species. Species are in turn grouped into genera (singular: genus). Human beings have the scientific name Homo sapiens. In this Homo (written with a capital letter) is the genus and sapiens (lowercase) is the species. Within the genus Homo are other species placed (e.g. Homo erectus, Homo habilis), all of which are extinct today. This makes our species, Homo sapiens is the only existing species of the genus Homo.
