Conodonts are an extinct group of lancelet-like chordates that lived from the Cambrian to the end of the Triassic age. The animals are rarely found as complete fossils, but small parts of the feeding apparatus are common in sediments. Because of the richness in species and the recognizability these parts are useful as index fossils. That is why conodonts play an important part in stratigraphic research, especially in dating layers of rock.
