Category: Volcanism

The Massif Central in central France is known for its volcanic activity. When lava flows cool slowly, they can crystallize. In Bort-les-Orgues (Limousin) pillars of meters long Phonolite occurs. Phonolite is (between mafic and felsic) volcanic rock containing predominantly potassium Feldspar, and more than10% Nepheline. This rock occurs in areas with alkali-rich volcanism. Because of its location in a river valley, these formations have not been lost through erosion.
