The extinct volcanoes in the background are from the Pliocene. They are located in a lagoon called Mar Menor. This lagoon is now closed by a sand ridge with dunes. Previously the volcanoes in the open sea. The islands are called Islas Mayor have an altitude of 104 meters. They are not freely accessible. At the beaches at Los Alcazares many foraminifera can be found consisting of Calcite in the most beautiful colors.
