Comments:
Under the waving yellow crops on this photo at Cap Blanc Nez up to 133 meters of fossil-rich Cretaceous sediments (Turonian / Cenomanian) are hidden beneath the surface. Microscopic algae (coccoliths) formed a hundreds of meters thick layer of lime, in a shallow and relatively warm sea, about 70 million years ago. The lime was later converted into limestone. In the Oligocene, the area was uplifted and erosion began to occur. The hard sandstone from the Jurassic (Cap Gris Nez) primarily offered much resistance. Therefore it is still visible in the landscape. Due to the rise in sea level (after the melting of the ice sheet) and river erosion there was finally an open connection between the North Sea and ocean. At the beach waves constantly erodes the rocks and a coastal cliff was formed. The English Channel widens annually by about 130 centimeters.

Comments:
This picture shows the coastal cliff at Cap Blanc Nez on the northern French coast. At the bottom of cliffs you usually find a small or larger scree slope. In this scree usually sorting occurs. The big blocks are rolling further down than the smaller ones. Scree slopes with loose material have, depending on the properties of the rock, an angle of inclination up to 37 degrees.

Comments:
Buckling folds at Agios Pavlos (at Agia Galini in southern Crete). From the beach on the stairs you can see the folds on top of the hill. The rock consists of limestone. These folds are about 3.5 meters high. There are also rocks with micro folds can be found.

Comments:
There are several theories about these structures. The traditional theory is that these are raindrop impacts, formed in the soft lime mud. A more recent theory is that the imprint of algal mats. The small circles were prints of air bubbles in the algal mats.

Comments:
Horizontal layering with alternating layers of clay and sand. The slightly greener band is due to the precipitation of an algae bloom. The excavated layer is a layer in which Septaria can be found.
