Comments:
Based on pure morphological grounds, wolf is difficult to distinguish from dog. The large distance between the point of the dens and the outer point of the thorny appendage is rather characteristic for wolfs. At this locality, the color (normally not a solid criterium) can generally be used as an indication of age - this brownish color is characteristic for fossils from the Late Pleistocene, while Holocene fossils from this locality are generally much darker, often black. Based on these two characteristics, in combination with the weight of the bone, Dick Mol identified this as the second cervical vertebra of a wolf (09-10-2016).
