Fossil Identification System
Superregnum: Eukaryota Woese et al. 1990
Subregnum: Plantae Haeckel,1866
Superphylum: Tracheophyta Sinnott, 1935
Phylum: Angiospermae Hermann, 1690
Species: Thalassocharis bosqueti Debey ex Miquel
These are rhizomes (base to which the leaves were connected, the wider imprints) with roots (the smaller imprints) of a seagrass species. The species is similar to the recent Zostera. This species is found in almost all the Cretaceous deposits of Limburg, sometimes even silicified. It forms the basis of a whole ecosystem, in which Eric Mulder also associated the turtle Allopleuron hofmanni, similar to the occurrence of adult specimens of the recent green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas, in seagrass forests of today.
