What is a Fossil?

Fossils are the remains of organisms or other signs (i.e. tracks) of organisms that lived in the past. For example bones, or shells. IchnofossilsClick here for info ! (trace fossils) are for example tracks, bitemarks, and excretions. These ichnofossils can teach us a lot about the organism.
Fossils are often petrified. This takes place as a result of chemical mineralisation processes.

Paleontology

Geology is the science of the earths crust, and the processes within. Geology comprises topics like earthquakes, volcanoes, oil and gas exploration, minerals, and fossils.
The specialistic science of fossils is called Paleontology.
