Home Fossils Equipment

When you are collecting fossils, please care for your safety and the safety of others! Use a helmet when entering quarries and be careful with cliffs. Also take a first-aid kit with you.

Tools needed for the collection of fossils The materials you need for collecting fossils depends on the location and the rock type. Some fossils are found in hard rocks and other in loose soil. You only need a good pair of eyes when the fossils are in loose ground. When collecting fossils in rocks you will need a geological hammer and chisels. When possible use chisels with a rubber safety rim to protect your hands. For very soft rocks you can use a course saw to extract the fossils. A shovel can also be very usefull.

When you have extracted the fossil you have to pack it really well for transportation. Small fossils can be put in plastic bags. Larger fossils must be wrapped up in old newspapers. Always write down the location and the specific geologic layer on a note and put this with the fossils. This is very important for identification of the fossil when you are home. Always take enough packaging and notes.
