Forum and Member Rules

The purpose of these regulations is to guaranty a pleasant forum experience for everyone, so please stick to them. Members who repeatedly disobey these rules will face their account being (temporarily) limited, blocked or terminated. Participating means you have read understood and agreed with the following terms:

General rules

  • All posts should concern fossils, geology or related subjects.
  • No rude or offensive language is allowed.
  • Always perform a search before posting. Your question might already be answered (repeatedly).
  • Write properly, using correct grammar. Think carefully about what you write, and how you express yourself. Misinterpretation can lead to serious misunderstanding. No MSN or chat language is allowed.
  • Some people are more experienced than others. Be patient with newbies. The goal is and remains sharing of knowledge and experience.
  • Youngsters: this discussion board is not a chatroom. Spamming or flooding will result in the limiting of the amount of posts / day. This rule will be applied rather strictly.
  • Stay on-topic, and do not 'steal' someone else's topic.

Registration

  • Register under your correct name, and provide a working e-mail address. This will only be visible to other members: it is not allowed to register anonymously or under a false name, your account will face removal.
  • Important! By registering, you agree with these terms and conditions!

Posting images

  • Post only images of fossils and related subjects.
  • Images must be sharp and clear. Use post-processing if necessary. Try to provide a scale, and several images taken from various angles. Unsharp, low-quality images are in general useless and take up bandwidth. They will be deleted without exception. For instuctions on the photography of faoosils, visit the Photography Page.
  • Under 'The Collection of ' you are invited to put 10 images of your own collection only.
  • Which forum members are allowed to place images in the online Photo database, is decided by the webmaster. Applications to participate should be addressed to him. Images provided should be of high quality! I'll say it again: quality (not quantity) is important.
  • Only post pictures you have taken. Respect the copyright of others.

Subfora

  • Make sure you're posting in the appropriate subforum, and no cross-posting (multiple posts) please. For the moment, the subfora "Locations", "Identification", "Trade" and "General" are available.
  • In the English language Subfora only messages in English should be posted.
  • Because of the intrinsic vulnerability of some collecting locations, please do not provide detailed information of vulnerable or protected collecting sites directly. Also do not publish names of vulnerable locations. Information about collecting locations can be send directly to the staff, they will evaluate it and provide a detailed description on this website if possible. The locations forum is only visible for members.
  • Provide new topics with useful topic titles (not another "what's this?" topic, please, "Charmouth ammonite" would be considered a better alternative).
  • In the subforum "Trade", people are able to contact each other, only to trade or sell fossils and related items only (so no recent material whatsoever, in particular shark jaws, shells, corals, .). No commercial ads are allowed, only private sales & trades. We cannot be held responsible for failed or bad transactions.

Pay attention to the following

  • It is generally unwise to post your e-mail address directly, this is related to spam problems. It's best to e-mail each other directly, or to provide an altered address, such as "name (at) fossils (dot) co (dot) uk", or yyfossilfreakyy@digtownyy.com (without y's).
  • If you see these rules violated, don't act yourself, but contact one of the moderators instead. We'll take care of it (oh, yes).
  • We cannot be held responsible for the content of this forum.

Location information

  • August 28, 2009: Here we will post very soon our strategy about the access to location descriptions.

And don't forget

  • We do have the right to remove postings at any time, for any reason.
  • Members who disobey the rules repeatedly can be (temporarily) restricted, blocked or removed!
