| INSTRUCTIONS:
How does the Forum function? |

Before you can post messages on the forum, you first have to register.
You can register as a new member by clicking on 'Register'.
The reading of the messages can without registering. When registering,
Name, Username, Password and E-mail address are required. The Homepage
and signature are optional.
After the registration, go to the 'Forum
Mainpage' and login with your username and password.

HELP! I am registered, but I cannot login, place messages or
edit my profile ...
When login does not function, first check if "Cookies" are permitted
in your webbrowser. You can modify the configuration of your browser.
Internet Explorer:
Add the site (http://www.fossiel.net) to the list of safe /
trusted websites. You can find this option in the menu Extra

Subforums
The Forum is subdivided in several subforums. With every Subforum
there is a small explanation what kind of massages belong there. Try
to place your messages in the correct forum. This helps to keep the
forum clean and tidy.

Moderators
You will meet sometimes moderators on the forum. Moderators can close,
move and combine or remove discussions. They can also remove users
and add new subforums.
The Moderators:

Locked
Topics
Old discussions will be locked when no recent replies are placed.
The topics remain on the forum, but you cannot post replies anymore.
You can recognize the locked topic with the following icon .

Reply
or New Topic?
In a forum you can see a list of 'Topics'. These can be recognised
with the icon . The Topic is a group
of messages which are answers of the first message in the topic. When
you want to answer a message in an existing topic use
. Your message will appear at the bottom of the topic. When you want
to start a new topic, you can use the button
. Writing messages is only possible when you are registered and logged
in. You can log-in at the Forum Mainpage. |

Adding Images to Forum messages
You can add images to your messages. In the Post Message page you
can upload the images to the forum. Before you write your message
you can add an image by selecting the file, and press the button
'Save Image'. A thumbnail of the photo will appear in your post-message
form when the upload succeeded.
It is only possible to add JPG or GIF files to the
forum. After the images are added, you can continue to write your
message. It is possible to add more than one image by repeating
the upload procedure. After you are finished typing your message,
press the button 'Post Message' or 'Post Reply' and your message
will be added to the forum.
Adding photo's by using [img] tags is not possible in this forum.
Instead you can past the link in your message and it will become
clickable automatically.
Mind to only place sharp and clear messages. If possible, photograph
the fossil from various angles. Show the size of the fossil by adding
a ruler. The size of the fossil can be important for the identification.
Unclear photographs make no sense, and can be deleted by the forum
moderators.

Useful functions
When you are logged in, you can click the
icon next to every message to send an e-mail to the author of the
message. When clicking the icon,
you can view the user profile of the forum member. Only you can
edit your own User Profile! By clicking
you can go directly to the homepage of the author of the message.
The icon
shows you photo's of the collection of the forum member.
In the Forum you can recognize new topics with the icon .
In the main page forums with recent additions are marked with .
The searchpage in the forum can be used to find old messages by
using one or more search terms.

Junior
Member, Normal Member and Senior Member
After registration you are first a Junior Member ( )
of the Forum. After placing more than 50 messages, you will become
a Normal Member ( ).
After 100 messages and minimum one year membership your account will be upgraded to Senior Member
( ). The moderators
can be recognised with the icon . |
The moderators of this site can manualy change the type of membership if necessary.

Emoticons or Smileys
In your messages you can use smileys. You can use the the relevant
code, and the smyley will appear in the pulicized message.

Texteffects
It is possible to use bold, italic or underlined
text in a message by entering the text between the following codes:
[b] bold text [/b] will result in: bold text
[i] italic text [/i] will result in: italic text
[u] underlined text [/u] will result in: underlined text
With every message you can also add an icon. The available icons
are:

Edit
My Profile
You can edit the information in your profile yourself (like password,
e-mailaddress, homepage, and additional information). Firrst log-in
on the forum, and then click on the "Profile" button. In
the blue cell above your profile, click on "Edit". Here
you can edit you basic profile information or add an Avatar (image
or photo of yourself). In the tab "My Collection" it is possible
to add photo's of your fossil collection. |
My
Collection
In the My
Collection page it is possible to add photographs of your own
fossils. The photo's can be added to the page via your Profile (see
above). You can add a maximum of 10 images. It is not allowed to add
other than fossil photographs. With every photo you can place comments.
This icon is placed next to every
message where the author have placed photo's in "My Collection".
By clicking the icon, you can view the users collection.

Photo
/ Identification Database
Several selected forum members have access to the Photo / Identification
system. They can add new photographs to the Photo
Page via their User Profile (see above). These members can add
or change information via two extra tabs in their profile. The photographs
and information must comply with the rules listed in the photo system.
This icon is placed next
to every message where the author have placed photo's on the Photo
page. By clicking the icon, you can view the users contribution
to the Photo / Identification system.

Location descriptions
Some collecting locations are very vulnerable. Therefore we limited access to some of this information to certain groups of members.
After login members have access to more location descriptions. You can login directly via the locations pages.
Also, the fossil locationsforum is only available to members. More information about our strategy see the
Forum / Memberrules.
